Doctor shortage

Doctor shortage

0 Comments | USA TODAY, August, 2009 | by Janice Lloyd

Family medicine is what Doug Dreffer has wanted to practice ever since he was a tummy tuck reno second-year medical student 14 years ago at Ohio State. He listened to a different drummer from the majority of doctors entering a workforce in which subspecialties generally are considered more glamorous — and lucrative.

“All the sexy shows on TV are about ER work or surgeons,” Dreffer says. “Grey’s Anatomy. ER

Penguin trades tuxedo for wet suit

0 Comments | Oakland Tribune, Apr 25, 2008 | by Michelle Locke

SAN FRANCISCO– What’s black and white and warm all over? A penguin in a wet suit, naturally.

Sounds like a joke, but it’s quite serious for biologists at the California Academy of Sciences who had a custom-made wet suit created for an African penguin to help him get back in the swim of things.

Pierre, a venerable 25 years old, was going bald, which left him with an embarrassingly exposed, pale pink behind.

Unlike marine mammals, which have a layer of blubber to keep them warm, penguins rely on their waterproof feathers. Without them, Pierre was unwilling to plunge into the academy’s penguin tank and ended up shivering on the sidelines while his 19 peers played in the water.

“He was cold; he would shake,” said Pam Schaller, a senior aquatic biologist at the academy.

Pierre is an African penguin, a species accustomed to temperate climates. The birds are nicknamed “jackass” penguins, because they make sounds similar to braying donkeys, quite startling the first time you hear it in an aquarium.

Schaller first tried a heat lamp to keep Pierre warm. Then she got another idea: If wet suits help humans frolic in the chilly Pacific, why not whip up one in a slightly smaller size?

Staff at Oceanic Worldwide, a supplier of dive gear based in San Leandro, were enthusiastic about the idea of making a real penguin suit.

“We were really excited to do it,” said Teo Tertel, company marketing specialist

Home Textiles Today, September, 2009

Carole Sloan, Founding Editor-in-Chief

It’s once again time to look at some of the more recent claims by the home furnishings world as a whole, as well as the textiles world in particular.

What brought this to mind was not only the upcoming home textiles gathering here in New York, but some recent opinions by the FTC and some smoldering issues that have not been resolved one way or another about performance assertions or ecological benefits.

The catalyst for this was a recent promotion by one of the industry’s Top 10 retailers. Price was not even an issue in this promotion

Candidates question need for $20 million recreation campus.(News)

0 Comments | Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL), March, 2005 | by Faiwell, Sara

Byline: Sara Faiwell Daily Herald Staff Writer If re-elected, Antioch mayor Taso Maravelas promises a $20 million recreation campus for the community. The facility would include Olympic-sized indoor and outdoor swimming pools, indoor sports courts, fitness equipment, saunas and a steam room, he says – all at no additional cost to taxpayers.

But Dorothy Larson, a trustee challenging Maravelas for mayor, says while the idea is nice, it’s not feasible. “There is no need to put this here,” she said

Sharapova cruises into WTA Toronto 2nd round

0 Comments | AFP, August, 2009

TORONTO (AFP) — Former world number one Maria Sharapova cruised into the second round of the WTA hardcourt tournament here with a straight sets win over compatriot Nadia Petrova.

The 22-year-old downed 10th seeded Petrova 6-3, 6-4, her third win over Petrova this season.

It was another step forward for Sharapova, who had shoulder surgery last October, returned to singles competition in May and is now ranked 49th in the world.

It was shortly after she won a marathon match in the second round of this event last year, when it was in Montreal, that Sharapova said she had re-injured her serving shoulder and would have to withdraw, launching her 10-month injury absence from the WTA Tour.

In the second round she’ll face Austrian Sybille Bammer, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2…

LECTRA : With newly extended Modaris 3D Fit simulation capabilities, Lectra promotes the use of virtual 3D prototyping in the apparel industry

Market Wire, June, 2008

Lectra, the world leader in integrated technology
solutions dedicated to the fashion industry, is pleased to announce that
the new version of Modaris 3D Fit, the highest performance virtual 3D
prototyping solution on the market, is now available.

Modaris 3D Fit enables pattern-makers, designers, developers, and sales and
marketing teams to simulate and visualize their models in 3D on a virtual
mannequin, including the colors, motifs, and fabrics (taking into account
their mechanical behavior) originally created in 2D. With Modaris 3D Fit,
the look and fit of a garment can be verified, and its style and that of
entire collections can be validated.

3D virtual prototyping: accelerating product development cycles and
reducing costs

As in the automotive and aeronautical industries and other sectors where
virtual 3D prototyping has already proved its worth and become a key
element of product development, this technology is now offering numerous
advantages for professionals in the fashion industry as well.

Virtual 3D prototyping ensures the quality of a garment and its look and
fit in all graded sizes, reduces the number of physical prototypes
necessary to finalize a model, and makes communication more fluid among the
actors in product development. It thus accelerates the collection
development cycle and enables users to overcome the “Fast Fashion”-specific
challenges of an ever-increasing number of collections and product
variants. Finally,

3D virtual prototyping helps reduce development costs and, as such, is a
real competitive advantage for apparel professionals. Modaris 3D Fit stands
out as the most advanced solution for the universe of fashion.

“Compared to the traditional method, Modaris 3D Fit lets us finalize models
more quickly, with improved accuracy in the proportions and fit. Modaris 3D
Fit lets us meet specific customer needs more efficiently. We can guarantee
optimal quality and respect their morphological characteristics by using
parametric mannequins which we adapt according to their needs. With Modaris
3D Fit we can offer our services to more companies, handle a wider variety
of products, and communicate faster,” said Massimo Trambaioli, Managing
Director at Pronto Model, a service bureau working for major Italian
brands.

“Nowadays, product development costs and delivery times are key elements
for all professionals in the apparel industry. With Modaris 3D Fit, virtual
3D prototyping can yield incommensurable reductions–between 30 and 50% on
average, depending on

the models–in product development cycle times, generating significant cost
reductions for our customers,” emphasized Daniel Harari, CEO Lectra
