Wall Street higher on China’s stimulus plan
NEW YORK, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) — Wall Street tried to hold onto early gains Monday, as investors boosted by China’s 586 billion U. S. dollars stimulus package also worried about auto giants.
U.S. stocks’ early rally followed advance in Asia and Europe after China announced plans to boost its economy through a mix of spending, subsidies, looser credit policies and tax cuts. Commodity stocks led the big board higher.
The market was also boosted by corporate news from insurance giant American International Group Inc., and McDonald’s. The U.S. government on Monday provided another 40 billion dollars financial assistance to AIG, which sent the bailout of AIG up to around 150 billion dollars, after the company reported a loss of 24.47 billion dollars for the third quarter,
McDonald’s is among the best performers Monday, after the company reported global comparable sales up 8.2 percent in October.
Meanwhile, investors also closely watched developments with General Motors Corp., Chrysler and Ford Motor Co. as the automakers are seeking financial help from the government. GM was downgraded to “sell” at Deutsche Bank AG. Deutsche Bank also cut its target price to zero. GM tumbled 30 percent in early trading.
In other corporate news, Circuit City Stores Inc., the second- biggest U.S. electronics retailer, filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy code.
The Dow Jones rose 85.55 to 9,029.36. Broader indexes also climbed

ICONIC boxing movie Rocky has inspired a Tyneside entrepreneur to a heavyweight business idea.
When sales consultant Ben Creighton was made redundant he decided to come back fighting and has set up his own novelty boxing business after one of his favourite films.
The 31-year-old first came up with a punch bag echoing a scene in Rocky in which Sylvester Stallone’s character trains by hitting sides of beef.
Ben has now created a new product, called the butcher’s bag – which he admits would not look out of place in an abattoir.
He made five prototypes before he was finally happy and the result is a three and a half foot bag shaped like a slab of meat.
Ben, of Tynemouth Road, North Shields, said: “It will inspire Rocky fans and have every macho-man’s testosterone pumping.
“I believe it will be a big hit among film buffs as well as serious boxers.”
Ben, who also hopes to expand his business by creating distinctive boxing gloves and mitts, set up Queensberry12 after he saw a television advert for the Global Startup Challenge, which sees seven competitors given a pounds 1,000 budget to help get their businesses up and running.

DEPUTY city council leader Kevin Foster warned the rise in National Insurance will take its toll on council employees and council tax payers.
He said: “The big thing for us in the pre-budget was the further rise in employers’ National Insurance contributions.
“As the largest employer in Coventry it will hit us – and hard.
“We’ve now got a finance team calculating what that will mean but we were already predicting having to make job losses as a result of grants being cut back from 2012 onwards.
“For many businesses 2012 will be the time when we’d be hoping to get people back to work as the economy starts to recover. But this is paid for by the employer not just the employee and that puts further pressure on jobs.
“It will certainly have to impact on jobs or council tax. It’s fundamentally money out of the council’s budget.
“I do welcome the Chancellor’s announcement around the one per cent cap on public sector pay, showing our three-year projections were fairly accurate, and creating youth employment opportunities.
“We do need to get people back to work but it seems a strange way to go about it by putting a tax on jobs.
“As Vince Cable said, it might be a good budget for bingo and boilers but it doesn’t address the fact that there are some very big challenges on public finances.
“We are already planning to deliver a large number of savings around our budget and this just increases the pressure.”
